Opera House

Waimarama Beach

Like a guardian and protector, Bare Island stands at sea out from the beach of Waimarama, which stretches from north to south on the East Coast, with wide sweeping expanses of golden sands and deep blue sea. On a great day the swell brings lines of breakers which roll into the bay and shallow sandy beach, making this a popular spot for tourists and locals.

The beach community is a renowned and loved place to relax and enjoy for Hawke's Bay people, with its quaint wooden cottages and rambling gardens falling over roadside fences dotted with the new homes built behind Tauputa hedges and wooden gates. The community, with its little roads and grass verges has the atmosphere of a coastal village: sleepy in week days and a bustling vibrancy with visitors on weekends.

Waimarama is steeped in Maori history and documented in the 'Historical Map of Fact and Fable' by Lt.Col R.M Bell M.B.E E.D. Waimarama is where Taewha landed here from the Takitimu. An established school of learning can be found at MaungaWharau, as can a WhareMaire named Pae-Whenua. One of the sea anchors of the Takitimu is said to be the landward rock Taupanga, visible at low tide 50m south of the old bathing sheds. The Kuku rocks are said to be the skids of the Takitimu, and Mukuaka (Capston Rock) to be the other sea anchor of the Takitimu- dropped at sea and visible at low tide between TePuka and Bare Island. Maretotara Falls

In 1922 the Havelock North Borough Council built a dam on top of Maraetotara Falls to create a head for a hydro-electric power station. A tree-shaded walk leads 10 minutes upstream to the falls and 20 minutes downstream through limestone scenery, passed the old turbine house and a surge tower.

Directions: Walk down to the junction with the Maraetotara River. It is a 10 min return walk to the falls on the left with a swimming hole. There is a ladder that reaches a concrete weir and returns 150 metres above the parking area. On the right a 10 min walk takes you to a concrete surge tower. The track rejoins the road 10 mins further on.

Te Angi Angi Marine Reserve

The Te Angiangi Marine Reserve was established in August 1997. It is located on the Central Hawke's Bay coast, approximately 30 km east of Waipukurau and Waipawa. It covers an area of about 1.3 square nautical miles (446 hectares), extending one nautical mile offshore from mean high water mark between Blackhead and Aramoana Beach at Shoal Bay - Read more about it.
